Centre unveils new maternal and child health initiatives
The Centre on June 29, 2026 unveiled a series of initiatives.
It's aim is to strengthen maternal and child healthcare, emergency medical services, and anaemia control.
It was held during the 16th Conference of the Central Council of Health and Family Welfare (CCHFW).
It highlights improvements in key health indicators and calling for greater Centre-State collaboration to achieve universal health coverage.
These initiatives represent a shift from fragmented healthcare interventions to an integrated, life-cycle, and digital-first approach.
1. SUMAN Roadmap 2030 (Surakshit Matritva Aashwasan):
The SUMAN Roadmap 2030 is a strategic blueprint designed to accelerate the reduction of the Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) and Neonatal Mortality Rate (NMR) to meet the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.
- Geographical Targeting: The scheme shifts focus away from broad state-level metrics to concentrate heavily on 130 high-focus districts across India that exhibit lagging health indicators.
- Infrastructure Interventions: It mandates the setting up of Birth Waiting Homes (BWHs) in remote, tribal, and hard-to-reach areas. These homes allow pregnant women to stay near healthcare facilities days before their expected delivery date to prevent transit-related delays and complications.
- Life-Cycle Approach: The roadmap expands services beyond pregnancy to cover preconception care, adolescent health, and family planning as critical determinants of safe motherhood.
- Assured Quality Services: It guarantees zero-tolerance for denial of services, ensuring free, dignified, and quality maternal and newborn healthcare at all public facilities.
2. Samagra Shishu Bal Swasthya Karyakram (SSBSK).
SSBSK marks a policy consolidation by merging two erstwhile flagship schemes: Home-Based Newborn Care (HBNC) and Home-Based Care for Young Child (HBYC).
It operates under the vision statement "First Three Years Complete Care.
- "Integrated Continuum of Care: Instead of isolated check-ups, it establishes a continuous monitoring mechanism for a child's first three years of life, focusing on early childhood development (ECD), nutrition, and immunization.
- Targeted ASHA Interventions: Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) will conduct structured home visits. For normal children, a standardized visit schedule applies, while high-risk children will receive up to 9 targeted visits to track growth faltering, delays, and illnesses.
- Maternal Mental Health Integration: Recognizing postpartum depression as a major public health issue, SSBSK formally integrates maternal mental health screenings into the standard postnatal care routine.
- Digital Convergence: Every child will be tracked using digital health systems like ABHA (Ayushman Bharat Health Account) and Baal-ABHA IDs, linking their early health records directly to the U-WIN portal for immunization.
3. National Ambulance Services (NAS) Guidelines 2026.
Recognizing that the "first golden hour" is critical for maternal and neonatal survival during emergencies, the government issued updated NAS Guidelines 2026 to eliminate systemic inefficiencies.
- Inter-State Standardization: The guidelines establish uniform operational benchmarks across all states, detailing exact specifications for medical equipment, onboard drugs, and emergency staff training.
- Single Emergency Integration: To reduce confusion and response times, the ambulance dispatch architecture will be fully integrated into the national 112 emergency response helpline.
- Advanced Tracking: Mandates real-time GPS tracking and digital link-ups between moving ambulances and receiving hospital trauma/maternity wards.
4. Revamped Anaemia Mukt Bharat (AMB) Guidelines.
Addressing the persistent challenge of nutritional deficiency among pregnant women and adolescent girls, the MoHFW updated the operational framework for the Anaemia Mukt Bharat strategy.
- Enhanced Supplementation: Streamlines the supply chain for Iron and Folic Acid (IFA) tablets and introduces advanced parenteral (intravenous) iron therapies at the grassroots level for severe cases.
- Focus on Undernutrition: Pairs anaemia control directly with maternal undernutrition tracking, screening for body mass index (BMI) variations, and dietary diversification programs through Poshan Vatsalayas.
