The 16th India-Japan Annual Summit, held in New Delhi from July 1-3, 2026, concluded with the unveiling of an ambitious package of 16 key outcomes, cementing Economic Security and Artificial Intelligence (AI) as the core structural pillars of their Special Strategic and Global Partnership.
Led by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, the summit successfully pivoted bilateral ties toward mitigating global supply chain vulnerabilities and building a trusted digital infrastructure.
Economic Security Architecture:
Both nations signed a landmark Joint Declaration on Economic Security to insulate critical domestic industries from geopolitical disruptions and market monopolies.
- Targeted Industries: Focuses on project-based collaboration across semiconductors, critical minerals, clean energy, and pharmaceuticals.
- Supply Chain Resilience: A strategic roadmap designed to reinforce a “China+1” alternative, scaling up manufacturing capabilities under India's Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
- Financial Backing: Japan committed to an investment target of Japan currency 10 trillion over the next decade, backed by a USD10 Billion Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC).
Strategic AI and Deep-Tech Integration
The summit formally elevated the relationship into a Strategic AI Research and Development Partnership through a dedicated Joint Statement on AI Cooperation. Instead of merely trading finished commercial products, the framework mandates deep joint engineering across the entire AI technology stack, including foundation models.
