India’s first regional rapid transit system trainset


  • The first trainset of India’s first Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) was recently handed over to National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC).
  • These trains are 100% indigenous.

  • What is Delhi–Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS)?
  • It is an 82.15 km long semi-high speed rail corridor connecting Delhi, Ghaziabad, and Meerut. The corridor is under construction.
  • It is one of the three rapid rail corridors planned under Phase I of the Regional Rapid Transport System (RRTS) project of the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC).
  • What is National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC)?
  • National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) is a joint venture company of the Government of India and the States of Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh (UP).
  • It is under the administrative control of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA).
  • It is mandated for implementing the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) project across the National Capital Region (NCR) of India.
  • The Delhi-Meerut RRTS will be the first in India to adopt the European Train Control System (ETCS) hybrid Level 2 signaling system. 
  • This is the core signaling and train control component of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS).
  • The RRTS corridors will operate the fastest trains in India with a design speed of 180 kmph.
