International Migrants Day 2021 observed On 18 December
Highlights:
- Every year on 18 December, International Migrants Day is commemorated worldwide.
- The United Nations, through the UN-affiliated International Organization for Migration, commemorates the day (IOM).
- The day is commemorated to honor the contributions of the world's 272 million migrants, including more than 41 million internally displaced people, and the problems they encounter.
- Harnessing the possibilities of human mobility is the theme of International Migrants Day 2021.
- The General Assembly adopted a resolution on the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families on 18 December 1990, to recognize the contributions made by millions of migrants to the economies of their host and home countries, as well as to promote respect for their fundamental human rights.
- The inaugural commemoration of the day took place in 1990.
- In addition, Filipino and other Asian migrant organizations began commemorating and promoting 18 December as International Day of Solidarity with Migrants in 1997.
