Sarada Menon,India's 1st Woman Psychiatrist, Passed Away

- Padma Bhushan Dr Mamballaikalathil Sarada Menon Passed away at 98 on 5 December
- India’s 1st woman Psychiatrist and the long-term head of the Institute of Mental Health, Padma Bhushan Dr Mamballaikalathil Sarada Menon, has passed away.
- She was born on 5 April 1923 in a Malayali family in Mangalore, Karnataka.
- She was bestowed with Padma Bhushan in 1992 for social works.
- Dr M Sarada Menon began her career as a Psychiatrist in the Institute of Mental Health in Kilpauk, Chennai, in 1959.
- She became the 1st woman Director of the Institute of Mental Health in 1961.
- She founded the Schizophrenia Research Foundation (SCARF India) in 1984 and psychiatrist R Thara.
- She also established ASHA, a community-based platform assisting the families of those affected by mental illnesses.
