MoTA forms committee to examine CFR Guidelines - 05 Mar 20

Highlights:
  • The Union Ministry of Tribal Affairs (MoTA) reintroduced the Model Guidelines for Conservation, Management, and sustainable use of Community Forest Resources (CFR Guideline) under the Forest Rights Act, 2006. 
  • MoTA created a committee to examine and recommend CFR Guidelines under FRA. 
  • The committee will be headed by NC Saxena, a former member of the Planning Commission of India and of the National Advisory Council.

  • It is expected that the guidelines will provide a clear understanding of the concept pertaining to CFR. 
  • It will also provide a conceptual framework on CFR and detailed procedural aspects to encourage the implementation of the community forest management and conservation regime in the spirit of the Act.
  • Along with the committee on CFR guidelines, MoTA also formed another committee headed by its former secretary Hrusikesh Panda.
  • Both the committees will submit their reports within three months.
  • Note: MoTA, in consultation with the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), created the CFR guidelines in 2016.

DAY-NULM signs MoU with Amazon for e-marketing of products made by SHGs - 07 Mar 20

Highlights:
  • Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana- National Urban Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NULM) that functions under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs signed MoU with Amazon for e-marketing of products made by Self Help Groups (SHGs) across the country in urban areas. 
Provisions: 
  • The partnership aims to provide access to a wider customer base for products made by SHGs and to strengthen the mission of creating sustainable livelihoods in urban areas. It is expected to unleash the innate entrepreneurial potential of urban women. 
  • The presence of women entrepreneurs on the ‘Amazon.in’ is currently growing, since the inception of its dedicated program Amazon Saheli. 

  • The MoU has been signed as a part of Women’s Day celebration. Every year March 8 is celebrated as International Women’s Day. 
  • The women entrepreneurs in E-Commerce platform has been growing substantially. 
  • The MoU will help to empower these women entrepreneurs.
  • The Agreement is a key initiative for the second edition of Shehri Samridhi Utsav to be organized between March 28, 2020 and April 12, 2020.

  • It is an initiative of Ministry of Housing and Urban affairs. It is a rally that aims at increasing the outreach of DAY-NULM.

What Pi ?
  • Pi is one of the most well-known mathematical constants. 
  • It is the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. 
  • It is represented by the lower-case Greek letter. 
  • For any circle, the distance around the edge is a little more than three times the distance across. 
  • The irrational number is most often approximated with the decimal 3.14 or the fraction 22/7.
  • Pi has been known for almost 4000 years. 
  • Mathematicians started to use the Greek letter in the 1700s. 
  • It was introduced by William Jones in 1706. 
  • The use of the symbol was popularized by Leonhard Euler, who adopted it in 1737. 
  • An 18th-century French mathematician, Georges Buffon, devised a way to calculate based on probability.

  • The Agharkar Research Institute of Pune has isolated 45 strains of methanotrophic bacteria.
  • The methanotrophic bacteria oxidize methane through anaerobic metabolism.
  • With the use of methanotrophic bacteria in agriculture, emission of methane shall be greatly reduced.
  • Apart from isolating the strains, the scientists have also created methanotrophic culture. 
  • The isolated bacteria were from southern and western India.
What are Methanotrophs? 
  • Methanotrophs are environmental organisms that have a major role in cycling of methane. 
  • They oxidize methane in the environment.
  • The methanotrophic bacteria oxidize methane through anaerobic metabolism. 
  • The methanotrophs are used as bio-inoculants.
What are Bio-Inoculants? 
  • Bio-Inoculant are strains of bacteria, algae or fungi. 
  • They take in nitrogen from atmosphere and prepare nitrates required for plants. 
  • By this, use of fertilizers are reduced. 
  • They also increase zinc and phosphorous availability for plants.
  • Benefits:
  • After carbon-dioxide, methane is the second largest green house gas contributor. 
  • With the use of methanotrophic bacteria in agriculture, emission of methane shall be greatly reduced. 
  • Methane traps 84 times of heat trapped by carbon-dioxide.

  • Bangladesh honored the 100th birth anniversary of the country's founding father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, barring any public gatherings for the event as due to the global COVID-19 pandemic.
  • The country had for months been preparing for a larger-scale event, with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expected to attend as a chief guest.
  • However, the virus outbreak forced Dhaka to scale back the event, informing the foreign guests, according to the country's Foreign Ministry.
  • Modi also canceled the trip and is expected to deliver an address to Bangladesh via video call to mark the day.
  • The government had earlier this month canceled Mujib's birth centenary celebrations, originally planned for March 17, March 25 and March 26, following the first confirmed three cases of coronavirus in the country on March 8.
'Friend of Bengal':
  • Mujib, a Bangladeshi politician and statesman known as "Sheikh Mujib," served as the country's first president and later as its prime minister.
  • His eldest daughter, Sheikh Hasina, is now the current prime minister.
  • Popularly known as Bangabandhu, or Friend of Bengal, Mujib was a leader in the push for political autonomy for then-East Pakistan, eventually becoming a central figure in the 1971 Liberation War of Bangladesh.
  • He was murdered along with most of his family members in a military coup on Aug. 15, 1975.

  • He then served as the Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court on 12 February 2011. In 2012, he served as the Judge of the Supreme Court of India. On 3 October 2018, he replaced Justice Dipak Misra as CJI. He was appointed as CJI by the President of India Ram Nath Kovind.
