Indian Railways Demands Setting Up Pension Fund To Deal With Rs 50,000 Crore Burden - 04 Feb 20

Highlights:
  • Indian Railways Demands Setting Up Pension Fund To Deal With Rs 50,000 Crore Burden Rs 50,000 crore outgo as pension to more than 15.5 lakh former railway employees, the railways asked the Finance Ministry to set up the pension fund. 
  • About 25 % of the railway's earnings go into paying the pensions to the former railway employees. Amount shoots over Rs 50,000 crore. 
  • Thus we have requested the Finance Ministry for the pension fund.
  • The chairman accepted that the railways this year are feeling the heat of the operating ratio, and it would not be able to control it by 97 percent. 
  • Last year, the operating rate for the railways was 97 percent, while this year it has gone up to 98.44 percent. 
  • The operating ratio is a measure of expenditure against revenue, and it shows how efficiently the national transporter.
  • An operating ratio of 98.44 % means the railways spent Rs 98.44 to earn Rs 100. 
  • The government auditor also highlighted that since 2016-17, the revenue surplus of the national transporter has been falling, which is indicative of the failing financial health of Indian Railways. Group B officers of the railways have in writing supported the cadre merger of the railways. 
  • The Chairman will be the cadre controlling officer responsible for Human Resources (HR) with assistance from a Director General (HR). 
  • Three apex-level posts will be surrendered from Railway Board, and all its remaining positions will be open to all officers regardless of the service to which they belonged.
  • The Board will also have some independent non-executive members, who will be highly distinguished professionals with in-depth knowledge and 30 years of experience, including at the top levels in the industry, finance, economics, and management fields.

  • India’s trade in China decreased from USD 89.71 billion in 2017-18 to USD 87.07 billion in 2018-19. 
  • India’s imports from China declined from USD 76.38 billion in 2017-18 to USD 70.32 billion in 2018-19, and our exports grew from USD 13.33 billion in 2017-18 to USD 16.75 billion in 2018-19. 
  • India’s trade deficit with China reduced from USD 63.05 billion to USD 53.57 billion. 
  • The Government of India consistently making efforts achieving a more balanced trade with China in all our official engagements with the Chinese Government, requesting them to lower trade barriers for Indian exports to China.
  • The various protocols signed to facilitate the export of Indian rice, rapeseed meal, tobacco and fishmeal/fish oil, and chili meal from India to China. 
  • National Medical Products Administration China jointly conducted a workshop, and Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation India to train Indian Pharma exporters on the updated regulatory practices of China, on 21st June 2019, at Shanghai, China. 
  • The Government of India taken various measures to extend support to exporters by facilitating Buyers Seller meets between potential Chinese importers and Indian exporters to increase exports. 
  • Indian exporters are encouraged to participate in major trade fairs in China to showcase Indian products.

Kaamya Karthikeyan-Youngest Girl in the World to climb South America’s Highest Peak Mt. Aconcagua - 09 Feb 20

  • Kaamya Karthikeyan, 12 years old, a class 7 student of Navy Children School (NCS) in Mumbai, Maharashtra, became the youngest girl in the world to climb Mt. Aconcagua, Argentina, (highest peak in South America).
  • Mount Aconcagua is the highest peak outside Asia which ranges about 6962 metres.
  • Kaamya reached the mountain peak on February 1, 2020 and unfurled the Indian tricolour flag.
  • She also climbed Mt.Mentok Kangri II, Ladakh (6,260 meters), on August 24, 2019.
  • She also reached the Everest Base Camp in Nepal (5,346 metres), Mt. Stok Kangri (6,153 metres) in Ladakh, Mt. Kilimanjaro (5,895 metres), Africa, Mt.Elbrus (5,642 metres), Europe & Mt. Kosciuszko (2,228 metres), Australia.

National Winter Games to be held in Gulmarg - 13 Feb 20

Highlights:
  • National Winter Games will be hosted in the world-famous ski destination Gulmarg in Jammu and Kashmir. The five-day games will be held from 7 March under the Khelo India programme.
National Winter Games:
  • National Winter Games is aimed to develop sports across the nation.
  • The event will witness 30 events under four disciplines including snowboarding, snow skiing, cross country, and snow show.
  • The Athletes in the age categories of 19-21 years, 17-18 years, 15-16 years, and 13-14 years can compete in alpine skiing, cross country skiing, snowboarding, and snowshoeing.
