Poznan Athletics Grand Prix:Hima Das wins second 200m gold - 09 Jul 19

Highlights:
  • Indian sprinter Hima Das won her second international gold in women’s 200m with a top finish at the Kutno Athletics Meet in Poland .
  • Hima, who has been struggling with a back problem for the past few months, clocked 23.97 seconds to clinch the gold while VK Vismaya bagged the silver in 24.06.
  • This was Hima’s second competitive 200m race of the year.
  • In her first competitive 200m race of the year, the Assam runner - who has a personal best of 23.10s - had clocked 23.65s on her way to gold in the Poznan Athletics Grand Prix, also in Poland, on Tuesday. Vismaya had finished third in that meet with a personal best time of 23.75.
  • Hima is the reigning world junior champion and national record holder in 400m.
  • National record holder Muhammed Anas also won the gold in men’s 200m race.
  • Jabir MP won the gold in men’s 400m hurdles in 50.21 seconds while Jithin Paul was third in 52.26 secs.
  • Indians swept the women’s 400m race through P Saritaben (52.77 secs), Sonia Baishya (53.73 secs) and R Vithya (53.73 secs).

  • Ace Indian sprinter Dutee Chand has won the gold medal in women's 100-metre sprint at the 30th Summer University Games in Napoli, Italy.
  • She become the first Indian to win do so. She clocked 11.32s in the final.
  • The 23-year-old had qualified for the finals with a 11.41s finish in the semifinal heats and led the final race from start to finish.
  • This is the first gold medal for India at this edition of the games. 
  • No Indian had qualified for the 100-metre final in the history of the University Games before this.
  • Chand, a 100m record holder and winner of two Asian Games silver medals, recently made up the headlines after she opened up about her homosexuality. 
  • She revealed that she is in a same-sex relationship with a girl from her home town.
  • Born in Chaka Gopalpur in Odisha to cotton weavers, Chand has been championing the cause of eligibility of female athletes in track and field events.

  • World Population Day was observed on July 11 every year. 
  • The day focuses towards the urgency and the significance of issues related to population. The Day has been celebrated for nearly three decades now. 
  • The Day brings the attention on the consequences of increasing population and how it affects the overall development plans and programmes.
Objectives:
  • World Population Day is meant to raise awareness about solutions related to the issues of growing population. One of the greatest threat that growing population faces is the  quick depletion of natural resources and the threat that it poses to sustainability. 
  • On this day, every individual must realise the responsibility they have towards one another. 
  • Several organisations like International Organisations like United Nation Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA), governments and non-governmental organisations conducts educational activities and other events on this day.
Brief History:
  • The event was first suggested by the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in 1989. Dr. K.C.Zachariah suggested the day in which population reached Five Billion when he worked as Senior Demographer at World Bank on 11 July 1987.

  • The World Bank Group on 12 July 2019 announced that Anshula Kant, an Indian national, has been appointed its next MD and CFO (Chief Finance Officer).
