Microsat-R military satellite successfully placed into Earth’s orbit by ISRO’s PSLV C-44

Highlights:

  • Microsat-R military satellite was successfully placed into Earth’s orbit by ISRO’s PSLV C-44.
  • Microsat-R is the name of the defence application satellite.
  • It was successfully placed into Earth’s orbit in the late hours of 24 January 2019. 
  • Along with it a student satellite, Kalamsat, made by Space Kidz India, was also successfully placed in the orbit.
  • It is worth mentioning that Microsat-R is the first Indian satellite that was placed by ISRO in a low orbit at an altitude of 274 km.
  • The mission with the modified PSLV with just two strap-on motors, dubbed the PSLV-DL (dual strap-ons), marked another first for ISRO as it provided an alternative to its normal six strap-on motors. 
  • This will enable it to carry slightly higher payloads than its Core-Alone version.
