The veteran CPI leader Sitaram Yechury elected as the new General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist)

Highlights:

  • The veteran CPI leader Sitaram Yechury elected as the new General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on 19 April 2015 at party's 21st Congress held in Visakhapatnam. 
  • Sitaram Yechury was unanimously elected CPI(M)'s new General Secretary to replace Prakash Karat.
  • He has completed three terms as General Secretary of the party. 
  • Mr.Yechury become the fifth General Secretary of CPI (M) in its fifty years of history. 
  • He represents West Bengal for CPI (M) in the Rajya Sabha. 
  • After his election, Yechury introduced a 16-member Politburo featuring four new entrants- Mohammed Saleem, Subhasini Ali, Hannan Mollah and G Ramakrishnan. CPI-M founding member VS Achuthanandan (91), was named a permanent invitee to the Central Committee on account of his age.
  • The first General Secretay was Sundarayya from 1964-1978.
